It is difficult to establish exactly where the production of pewter dinnerware began and developed. The oldest known items come from western Germany and Flanders. Chance finds, however, sometimes upset dating schemes. It is a fact, however, that objects in pewter became popular towards the end of the Middle Ages. From the sixteenth century on, basins, fruit stands, vegetable dishes and bowls of various shapes and sizes often appear in paintings of kitchens, dinners and banquets.
