Das englische Wort coaster stammt von dem Gebrauch ab, nach dem Essen eine Flasche oder Karaffe Portwein oder Brandy am Tisch weiterzureichen, nachdem die Tischdecke entfernt war, um sie nicht zu sehr zu beschmutzen, und bevor das Dessert serviert wurde. Die ersten Flaschenhalter erschienen um 1760 und wurden oft von auf Körbe spezialisierten Handwerkern hergestellt. Sie wurden paarweise oder auch in Vierergruppen (manchmal auch mehr) hergestellt und hatten gelochte, 4-5 cm hohe Seiten.
