Antique inkwells

inkwells

Pewter or silver inkwells were rarely made before the end of the seventeenth century but they became very popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and were frequently given as gifts. The more complex inkwells included an inkwell, a sand pot, a sealing wafer holder, a bell, a wax brush and a candleholder, all placed on a generally rectangular tray that sometimes featured a groove which was used to hold the pen steady. Glass ink bottles appeared in the middle of the eighteenth century.

Our pewter inkwells have a solid appearance and a particular patina which is never dark and you only need water and soap to give them again their original shade. They are accurately manufactured in order to seem "antique" and they give to the desk the right warmth.

The shapes of our inkwells are reminiscent of and inspired by classical tradition: they are crafted from cast pewter. The alloy used satisfies all EEC and USA regulations governing containers for alimentary use.
